My Bookshelf - want a book?

Wednesday, 3rd November 2004 | 1:20 PM
Insanity of my life

Egads.. my start to NaNoWriMo hasn't been going on very well. I'm completely exhausted. I'm working practically 12-hr days, and working even on weekends (although I try to avoid it being 12-hr days there too). Add to this all being happening in the month of Ramadan, let's just say that sometimes I feel like an empty shell just existing.

From where I'm watching now it looks like we will have four more years of The Shrub. NOOOOO. Sorry Americans, I'm aware that it's your election, and I have no right to tell you how to vote - in fact, I wouldn't even presume to. But I don't think you have the right to tell me what I can and cannot feel regarding the result. And I'm sure most of you won't - just pre-empting the closed-minded Americans who might drop by. ;)

Then again, the American election looks to be like a very complicated process. We'll see how it goes.

Where I live we're a "democracy" under a dominant party system, and with the lack of a credible opposition to the dominant party, we're practically a democracy just in name. So you know, if I had a chance to vote, I definitely will. The thing is, where I live, I recall very few occasions during elections in which our constituency were not walk-over victories by the ruling party. And they blame us for being politically apathetic. Apathy sets in when the feeling of helplessness and futility sets in. You can't have it both ways, ruling party. If you want people to care, you have to acknowledge what they want and come down from your pedestal a little. Not dismiss our concerns as and when they don't suit you.

That's my short update for now. Hari Raya's coming and I'm hardly in the mood for it. Worrying about my family's financial problems is a main reason. Being so tired out from working all these extra hours is another. I think when the day comes, I'm just going to be glad that by then, our bargain sale will be over (and hopefully we'll have a successful one) so we won't have to spend anymore evenings hauling and tagging books. By then Ramadan will be over, which makes me sad because I've been very deprived this Ramadan of all the usual Ramadan stuff.

But hopefully, everything will be more sane by then.

Addendum: A funny note by one of our humourists on the Singapore election system, which reflect what I've said about it above

20. That Singaporeans are following the US Elections with great interest. May as well, since most of us have as much opportunity to vote in the US Elections as we do the Singapore one. Kerry for Aljunied GRC!

25. That with US Elections heading for a repeat of 2000's deadlock, the US may wish to give up the Electoral College system and try our Singapore GRC system. Sure got clear winner one (give or take a few walkovers).
LOL!!!
