My Bookshelf - want a book?

Thursday, 9th June 2005 | 5:59 PM
50 random facts

  1. I'm the eldest of four kids, a fact that gives me no small amount of grief. Half of that led me to start this diary, I'm sure.
  2. I was born on 12 September. That makes me a Virgo, but I've been told that I'm the most atypical Virgo that they've ever come across. I think they were talking about my ability to cope with clutter.
  3. That said, I think I probably have ADD. I've always had an extremely short attention span and other ADD-related symptoms since forever.
  4. I love reading and writing.
  5. I would rather read a book than watch TV.
  6. I'm very much a boring homebody. Staying home with a good book sounds fabulous to me.
  7. I'm almost multilingual. I read, write and speak English, Malay and French. I LOVE languages.
  8. I treasure honesty, dignity, tact, kindness and intelligence in a person.
  9. I think confidence is sexy.
  10. I get stage-fright. All the time when I need to go on stage. I get these huge butterflies in my stomach and my voice turns into a croak.
  11. I can't draw or paint to save my life.
  12. I've never had formal music training, but can read notes and sight-read - whatever that last one is.
  13. I've been fat for as long as I can remember.

  14. I love to travel. I've been to Malaysia, Bali, Thailand, France and Italy.
  15. Strangely though, I don't like to fly. I get too restless in the confined space.
  16. I'd rather travel than shop.
  17. I hate shopping for clothes - I find it too troublesome to have to try the clothes on.
  18. I love the information and digital age.
  19. As a little girl, I wanted to be a detective when I grew up. Or a spy. I loved Nancy Drew.
  20. I read teen magazines as a pre-teen and magazines for young women as a teen. Now that I'm in my 20s, I don't really read women's magazines, just subject-specific ones.
  21. I hate being broke and in debt.
  22. I can't drive, and am probably addicted to taking cabs.
  23. I think Yoda is cute.
  24. I always say if there's a guy who's my greatest "love", it's probably Brad Pitt. I've had a crush on the man since I was 12.
  25. I would read or watch anything as long as the story's good.
  26. Otherwise, I would watch something if the guy in it is cute enough for as long as I don't have to spend money on watching the show.
  27. I never had a Barbie doll as a kid. I never really wanted one, but I wanted one just because all the other girls had one. My mom never bought me one because we couldn't afford one, and because I would be bored of it quickly anyway. She was especially right on that last bit.
  28. I'm a bit of a control freak, and I get a bit territorial when it comes to my space and my possessions.
  29. I'm right-handed.
  30. Until I was almost 10 years old I always thought you're supposed to play the guitar with the left hand. Now I know I thought that because until I was 10 all the guitarists I've seen on TV were left-handed. When I was 5 I played a toy guitar and then later air guitar when I was pretending to be a rock star. I played with my left-hand and uncle totally I thought I was left-handed. I couldn't correct him then because I hadn't known the concept of right/left-handedness at that time.
  31. The only thing I like about the 80s is probably the music.
  32. My favourite superhero is Superman. I've liked him since age 5. He's the superhero of all time.
  33. As a kid I used to pretend I was him. My friends told me I should be Supergirl because I was a girl. I ignored them. I thought Superboy, Supergirl and Super-anyone-who-wasn't-Superman to be 'fakes' or wannabes.
  34. The X-men came second in terms of cool superheroes.
  35. Although I liked the Ninja Turtles too when I first learnt about them in the 80s/90s. I thought they were cool and funny.
  36. I always thought the Ninja Turtles looked naked without their headbands.
  37. One day, I hope to own a house with a pool.
  38. I love swimming more than running.
  39. I'm a feminist.
  40. I'm a Muslim.

  41. For those who wonder how on earth can a Muslim feminist exist, I would like to point out that the notion of equality in women exist in Islamic societies way before it did in Western societies. And I believe Islam doesn't oppress women. Men oppress women.
  42. As much as I'm an ADD-suffering slacker, there's a competitive, highly perfectionist side to me as well. Maybe that's as far as I go when it comes to being a typical Virgo.
  43. I can't drink coffee well anymore. Following months of drinking highly-caffeinated drinks, especially coffee to keep me up while I was studying for A levels, I restrained myself from coffee for the next six months. Now I can't drink it well anymore - it'll open my eyes, but my brain will be extremely sluggish after drinking it. Assuming I don't get a headache immediately after that.
  44. I was born and have lived in the same place all my life. I love my country more than I let on, simply because I can't foresee any other home other than my home country.
  45. If I ever live in another country, which I dream to do because I feel I need to be able to expand my horizons and so forth, I'll probably return someday.
  46. Unless of course, it's no longer a safe haven for me anymore (God Forbid).
  47. I believe if everyone would just focus on the things we have in common, rather than dwell on our differences, the world would be a much better place.
  48. Of course, that would mean the whole world would simply need to apply some common sense and used their brains a bit - something we obviously haven't succeeded at.
  49. I'm anti-war and destruction.
  50. I love my job more than I let on - hello, I'm a booknut working in the book industry!

  51. I always try to look on the bright side of life. Because life sucks enough as it is, I think we don't need our mindset to make it worse.
