My Bookshelf - want a book?

50 Books

I had a crappy Friday at work. We blamed the date, conveniently.

I realised late last year that I had been reading too much escapist fiction (i.e. women's fiction). Not that it's entirely bad, but it's against my nature to be reading only one genre all the time. I blame it all on laziness. I give up on books I can't get into with my short attention span too soon. Intellectually I need to push myself more.

So this year, I aim to read 50 books (inspired by my favourite book blog), and hopefully at least half of them won't be chick-lit. I have at least a shelf of critically-acclaimed/literary prize-winning/literary prize-nominated books anyway.

Here goes...

50 Books of 2006:

  1. Spellbound by Nora Roberts
  2. Simply Sensual by Carly Phillips
  3. Simply Scandalous by Carly Phillips
  4. First Comes Love by Christie Ridgeway (24 Jan 2006): They say she's the next Jennifer Crusie, but I don't agree. Read this only if you're really bored.
  5. Why Do Men Have Nipples by William Goldberg & Mark Leyner (30 Jan 2006): The book that is selling so well that the publisher was constantly running out of stock of it. It gave such a big headache that I actually memorised the ISBN. It was quite an amusing read - basically like something out of Scholastic's Horrible Science series but for adults.
  6. Then Comes Marriage by Christie Ridgeway (11 Feb 2006): Average mindless read. Better than the first one.
  7. Crosscut by Meg Gardiner (21 February 2006): Meg Gardiner has got talent, but hasn't quite hit her stride yet. What I can really see is that she gets better with each book. Her prose is good, just needs work with her plotting. Actually somehow I got this vibe that she might better trying to write sci-fi or fantasy because of this lack. I got a bit lost reading this book because I just realised that I missed one book in the series, the one that just came before this title.
  8. Jericho Point - Meg Gardiner (24 February 2006)
  9. A Wrinkle in Time - Madeleine L'Engle (25 February 2006)
  10. Dealing with Difficult Colleagues (1 May 2006)
  11. Conversations with the Fat Girl - Liza Palmer (20 May 2006)
