My Bookshelf - want a book?

Thursday, 17th March 2005 | 2:41 PM
But now, reality beckons

Been spending the past 4 days in Bali, Indonesia, with two of my friends. Had a great time. Bali is very touristy, and when it comes to shopping Thailand is better in terms of prices and bargaining power - and to think, I spoke Indonesian enough to fool the people that I was Indonesian. I don't think they were fooled though. It's just that they know we were not Balinese, and thought we spoke Indonesia quite well, but they couldn't quite decide which part of the Malay archipelago (which is almost all of southeast Asia) we were from. They were thinking we were either Malaysian or from some part of Indonesia. Essentially, we weren't local, and thus, fair game for them.

I think I spent far too much anyway on souvenirs and such. Bought stuff for myself too - surfing shorts, a new top, a couple of bags, two pairs of sandals... so I'm trying to think it's quite fair in the end. Bali was hot, and humid, and since the rainy season was still on, a bit rainy. I find it amazing despite how touristy the island is, the people still remain quite traditional and quite close to their roots. I stayed in Kuta, which was basically Surf Central for Bali, but didn't have time to check out the famous Kuta beach (a travesty, I know). Tried out some watersports in Nusa Dua beach, almost at another end of the island. I did parasailing, felt as if I was going to die when the sails swooped me up.

My photos will be out once I extracted them from my multimedia card, and once my friends photos are ready as well. One of them got pictures of me parasailing - wasn't able to get my own photos of that. I sent out a few postcards while I was in Bali. I hope the people I sent them to got them. I haven't had a very good track record of people receiving the postcards I sent them while I was away.

I should have taken an extra day off to recover. I am more tired than I realised. So distracted at work today. And today feels like the longest day for work.

And oh yeah, I still have homework to do for French class tomorrow evening. *groan* Of all the weeks my teacher had to start setting me homework, it would be the week when I was mostly on holiday.

Ah well. At least it will be a shorter week for me next week, with the Good Friday long weekend and all. Yay.
