My Bookshelf - want a book?

Monday, 22nd November 2004 | 2:21 PM
Food and exercise - yeah, I know. AGAIN.

Monopoly breeds complacency.

At the nearest cafeteria near my place, there used to be only two stalls selling halal food. One sells Malay cuisine, the other Indian. The Malay stall closed somewhere in the middle of this year, and there hasn't been a replacement since. Therefore for halal food at that place, the Indian stall has monopoly. It's annoying. We're getting slip-shod service (in the first place, the stall hasn't been all that great when it comes to that), and shoddy food. They will just seel whatever they have and if we don't like it then, too bad. It's horrible. They don't care about what their customers want anymore. One of my colleagues swore last week he would never buy anything from that stall again.

It's all my fault for not having gone grocery shopping over the weekend. I should start eating salads for lunch again. The food around here is crap, when it comes to halal food. The best alternative we have is to go to the nearest mall - but going there takes time, and food there is slightly more expensive. Not economical for daily lunching - compared to hawker food. But anyway, since it's my fault for not having gone grocery shopping, I decided to stay in during lunch and finish some work (have a meeting later with the Boss and I'm quaking in my pants) while they get me something from the Indian stall. As of now, I don't care what they get me anymore. It's not as if I have much of a choice.

I forgot to say that I bought a pedometer when I was at the mall last Saturday. I want to try that "10,000 steps a day" plan. First I bought it just because it would be nice to be able to walk away from a treadmill yet have an idea of how far I walked for how long. But I just read about this Steps plan, and I thought it would just be good to get me to move my butt, heh. But so far, it hasn't looked good. I'm barely in the hundreds when it comes to the number of steps I've taken today. Hmmm. Apparently the plan for the first week is for me to monitor how many steps I take, get an average, and then for next week to increase the number of steps by 20% or so, and this goes on week after week, till I finally reach the 10,000 steps a day target. :) This will be like Attempt No. 1734081 or something at me trying to get in shape. I can't think of a reason why I shouldn't just give up too. Oh, and I'm getting this book. I'm quite sceptical of how yoga can aid weight-loss, yet I'm quite curious about it as well.

But you know, anything beats just sitting on my ass all day. Time to go down to the warehouse to "shop". ;-)

Thanks to everyone who left me a note or signed my guestbook. I loved what you guys had to say about reading and books. I must tell you - I get a kick checking out people's booklist, looking for ideas on what books I should check out. And glad to hear no one thinks me too weird either for loving to read so much. :)
